^^Strider
^The man that grabbed you reveals himself to be Strider, the same man who'd watched you so
intently all evening.
^"Your disappearing trick will certainly interest the servants of the Enemy. Now, your road from
here on will be watched intently by them, night and day. I am a Ranger and know all of the land
between here and the Misty Mountains. If you will have me, I can take you to Rivendell by paths
that are seldom trodden."
^You are not sure whether to to trust this strange, dishevelled man out of the wild; but surely a
servant of the Enemy would look fairer and feel fouler?
^He kneels down at your side. His eyes are keen, strong and commanding. There is a light in
them that reminds you of Gandalf. He looks deeply into yours amd says:
^"You are afraid of the Black-Riders that track you, but not yet afraid enough... they come from
Mordor, and the grey wizard is not here to aid you. I am Gandalf's friend; I will protect you."
^At the mention of Gandalf's name your eyes light up but you remain silent. Strider then suddenly
stands very tall, throwing back his cloak, he draws his sword:
^"If I was after the Ring, I could have it - NOW!" He is still for a moment, but holds your
attention, " ...I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and if by life or death I can save you, I will."
^Suddenly, all doubt leaves you. This Strider may be strange and wild, but he is also a friend.

Strider convinces Frodo that the party should sleep in another room, for he fears the Black Riders
will attempt to take the Ring tonight.
^So, you move to a second floor room, leaving only decoy hobbits in the beds of your original
room.
^Sure enough, Strider is proved right. In the mornng you find that the first room has been broken
into and, chillingly, the decoys have been thrown from the beds and slashed at with heavy swords.
^You decide not to linger in the village a moment longer, but, to your consternation you find that
the Black Riders have driven off all the ponies and horses from the Prancing Pony's yard.
^You'd hoped to take some as pack animals, now it looks as though you'll have to carry all your
own gear over miles of open countryside.
^However, thanks to the Innkeeper, Barliman Butterbur, all is not lost. He has acquired a
pack-pony for you, at great expense, from a rough looking character called Bill Ferny.
^The poor thing looks like it hasn't had a good meal in some time and Frodo takes pity on it --
naming it Bill after its bad owner.

Standing alone on the very edge of the Midgewater marshes you meet a young hobbit from
Archet. His face is full of concern as he enquires into whether you will be travelling across the
marshes.
^Replying that you are indeed travelling east, he asks that, should you come across a tomb
standing upon a lone isle in the swamps, would you ensure that it is both locked and its door is
concealed? He explains that the tomb is the last resting place of his old Master, a rich and well
travelled man:
^"Several days ago some strange, swarthy men came to Archet looking for him, saying that he
owed them money and that they were here to take it. Well, my Master never owed no money to
no one as long as I knew him. They looked like thieves if ever I saw one. Anyway, they found out
where he was buried and have gone off to loot the grave no doubt.
^"...I'm just a simple hobbit, whereas you look like folk as can handle themselves... I'd be ever so
grateful if you could help."
^You comfort the poor hobbit and leave, reassuring him that should you find the grave, you'll do
what you can.

waving by the trees and hope that you do find the grave of his Master before those greedy
